Marci Callan

Head Coach

Email

Marci Callan is the Fairport Area Swim Team’s (FAST) Head Coach and General Manager.  She oversees the entire FAST swimming program.  Under Callan's 36-year leadership, FAST's eight-person coaching staff nutures an environment filled with opportunity and tradition for its 200-plus members, which include boys and girls ages five to 30, who range in skill levels from beginners to potential Olympians.

Under Callan's tutelage, FAST has consistently sent swimmers to national championships for the 23 years.  Dozens of FAST's athletes have won Section V High School Swimmer of the Year Awards, state scholastic individual titles, and NCAA All-American honors.  FAST has also had 3 swimmers who have won the Local High School Athlete of the Year Award at the annual Rochester Press-Radio Club Dinner, 4 athletes who won the WHAM Sportswoman of the Year Award, and in 2004 FAST received the WHAM Outstanding Achievement Award.  FAST has also produced four U.S. Olympic Trial Qualifiers in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2008, & 2012.

Marci is the General Chair of the Niagara LSC, a position where she oversees 6,600 swimmers from 76 member clubs.  She has also been the LSC's camp coordinator for the past 15 years and since 2006 has been the meet director of the Niagara Long Course Classic.  On the Eastern Zone (11 states) level, Callan served as the coach-director as well as host (April 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) of the Eastern Zone Spring Championships, which has brought more than 700 competitors (ages 9-18) to Rochester each year.

In 2008 Callan became the first woman from the Eastern Zone ever to be elected to the board of coaching directors of USA Swimming, and is one of just three women on this national board.

A three-year chair (2005-07) of the USA Swimming Age Group Planning Committee, Callan received national recognition in 2007 when she was honored with USA Swimming's prestigious Outstanding Service Award.

Marci has been a member of the Fairport Central School's aquatic staff since 1982.  She's currently the girls varsity assistant coach (since 1992) and a co-coach of the boys and girls modified team (since 1999).

Mike Kennedy

Coach - Senior Program

Email

Mike Kennedy has been a part of the FAST coaching staff since 1990.  Coaching with the senior program, he coaches directly with our high school, college and post graduate athletes.  Kennedy also is the head coach of both Fairport's varsity boys (since 1999) and girls teams (since 1994).  During that time he has developed dozens of All-Americans, both in swimming and academically.

Mike grew up with the Fairport swimming at a very early age.  His family were boosters of all facets of the Fairport swimming program for many years.  He was a very successful HS swimmer for Fairport, where he was a two-time All-American and once held the state record in the 400 free relay for 10 years.  Kennedy was a team captain, and was a member of Fairport's first boys HS team to win a Section V title (1981) and it's first team to be ranked #1 in NYS (1982).  He was also one of FAST's first National qualifiers, competing in the 100 freestyle at the meet held in Gainsville, Fla.  In college Mike attended Oswego State University where he specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly.  While there, he was an All-American and would earn a degree in psychology.

Kennedy has coached the Fairport HS girls to six Section V titles as well as three #1 ranked NYS teams.  With the HS boys, three Section V titles and three #1 ranked NYS teams.  He was the Section V, Class A boys coach of the year three times (2008, 2010, & 2011).  In 2003 Mike was named coach of the year by the Fairport/Perinton Post.  In 2000, the National HS Association presented him with the National Boys' Coach of the Year award.

Coach Kennedy has been a 4x USA Swimming National Zone Distance Camp coach, and was head coach of the training camp that took place in Buffalo in 2000.  In this program he worked alongside legendary Olympic coaches Joe Bernal (Bobby Hackett's coach) and Bud Macallister (Janet Evans' coach).

Many of the swimmers Kennedy has coached have gone on to compete at some of the top Universities and Colleges in the country, such as Stanford, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Harvard, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Virginia and Tennessee --to name a few.

Ryan Callan

Coach - Senior Program

Email

Ryan Callan joined the FAST Coaching Staff in September 2002, working directly with the Senior Program athletes (S3, S2 & S1).  He has remained with the coaching staff for the last 10 years.  At FAST he has helped develop 11 National Qualifiers, 3 World Cup Circuit competitors, 54 USA Sectional swimmers, 6 US Open athletes, 3 Open Water National qualifiers and 1 Olympic Trial qualifier.

Callan has also been a three-time Niagara LSC Zone Team Coach, and was a member of the USA Swimming National Select Camp Coaching Staff (2004) where he worked alongside USA Swimming Biomechanics Coordinator Russell Mark.

Prior to FAST Ryan spent the previous 4 years coaching with the Marist Swim Club under Head Coach Larry VanWagner in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he headed the age group program (12 & under ages).  Callan also worked with MSC's senior program which was, at the time, training 4 swimmers for the 2000 Olympic Trials.

As an athlete Ryan was a two-time National competitor for FAST.  In high school he captained the 1997 Fairport Varsity Boys Team, which was ranked 4th Nationally for all public high schools.  Callan went on to compete for Marist College, where he specialized in the IM, backstroke and distance freestyle on an athletic and academic scholarship.  At Marist he was a team captain, graduating with two degrees in public relations and business administration in 2001.

In addition to working for FAST, Coach Callan is in his sixth year as part of the Fairport Varsity Boys Swim Coaching Staff.  He also works as an aquatics instructor for the Fairport Central School District.

This past year Callan was awarded the 2011 Niagara LSC Senior Coach of the Year Award, an accolade that was shared with Coach Kennedy and Coach Marci.  In the same year he was elected Senior Chair for the Niagara LSC and currently serves on the Technical Planning Cmte.  Prior, he was the Senior Coaches' Representative for Niagara.
