Mike Kennedy has
been a part of the FAST coaching staff since 1990. Coaching
with the senior program, he coaches directly with our high school,
college and post graduate athletes. Kennedy also is the head
coach of both Fairport's varsity boys (since 1999) and girls teams
(since 1994). During that time he has developed dozens of
All-Americans, both in swimming and academically.
Mike grew up with
the Fairport swimming at a very early age. His family were
boosters of all facets of the Fairport swimming program for many
years. He was a very successful HS swimmer for Fairport,
where he was a two-time All-American and once held the state record
in the 400 free relay for 10 years. Kennedy was a team
captain, and was a member of Fairport's first boys HS team to win a
Section V title (1981) and it's first team to be ranked #1 in NYS
(1982). He was also one of FAST's first National qualifiers,
competing in the 100 freestyle at the meet held in Gainsville, Fla.
In college Mike attended Oswego State University where he
specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly. While there,
he was an All-American and would earn a degree in
psychology.
Kennedy has coached the Fairport HS girls to six
Section V titles as well as three #1 ranked NYS teams. With
the HS boys, three Section V titles and three #1 ranked NYS teams.
He was the Section V, Class A boys coach of the year three
times (2008, 2010, & 2011). In 2003 Mike was named coach
of the year by the Fairport/Perinton Post. In 2000, the
National HS Association presented him with the National Boys' Coach
of the Year award.
Coach Kennedy has been a 4x USA Swimming National
Zone Distance Camp coach, and was head coach of the training camp
that took place in Buffalo in 2000. In this program he worked
alongside legendary Olympic coaches Joe Bernal (Bobby Hackett's
coach) and Bud Macallister (Janet Evans' coach).
Many of the swimmers Kennedy has
coached have gone on to compete at some of the top Universities and
Colleges in the country, such as Stanford, Minnesota, Notre Dame,
Harvard, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Virginia and Tennessee --to name a
few.
