FAST Senior Coach Ryan Callan

Coach Ryan Callan is in his sixth year working with the FAST senior 1, 2 and 3 groups, comprised of athletes 12 years old to the college level. In addition to coaching with FAST, Callan was an age group coach with the Marist Swim Club from 1999-2001, working with kids ages 13 and under. He also has experience working under John Trembley (Head Coach, University of Tennessee) at USA Swimming's National Select Camp and at the United Swimming Clinics at the Mercersburg Prep Academy.  Additionally, Callan is the assistant varsity boys swimming coach at Fairport with coach Mike Kennedy.

In the spring of 2001 he graduated with a BA degree in Communications from Marist College. In the fall of 2001 he took on a position as an Assistant Sports Information Director at Marist through the spring of 2002.  He is currently pursuing an additional degree in physical education/teacher certification from Brockport State University.

Ryan grew up with the FAST program, starting competitive swimming at the age of 8. During his high school years on the club scene he was a member of the 1997 Eastern Zone All-Star Team, with the championship contested at the University at Buffalo. Representing Niagara District, Ryan competed in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 BK, 200 BK, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. He also competed in two Junior National Championships as a member of FAST’s open men’s 800 freestyle relays. At the Junior Nationals in the spring of 1998, he helped his 800-yard freestyle relay to a 16th place finish, while setting the 17-18 boys Niagara District record of 7:02.57 which still stands today.

A four-year Fairport High School varsity letterman, Callan was a member of four Class A, Section V Championship title-winning teams in 1994, 95, 96 and 97. He was also part of three teams that were ranked number one in NYS: 1994, 96, 97. In his senior year he served as tri-captain of the FHS team during the 1996-97 season which was ranked fourth nationally.

Ryan swam four years for NCAA Division I Marist College, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), under head coach Larry Van Wagner.  While at Marist he was a four-time All-MAAC team member, a two-time MAAC All-Academic team member, an All-ECAC team member in his senior year, served as team co-captain, and was the former school record holder as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
