Mike Kennedy named Section V Coach of the Year

Nicholas Weiner

Congratulations to Coach Mike Kennedy on winning the Section V Class A Coach of the Year honor! We're proud to have such an invaluable asset on our coaching staff.

Mike has been a member of FAST since 1975. His parents were early boosters of all facets of our swim program at Fairport, whether it be organizing car-pools for swimmers who needed a lift to practices/competitions, or painting the inside walls of the FHS pool area, Mike's family paved the way for our booster program which has since benefitted hundreds of Fairport swimmers for nearly 40 years.

Mike has been a coach on our FAST staff since 1988. He started as a varsity assistant for the Fairport girls' in 1992 and became head coach in 1994. He started as the boys' varsity assistant in 1992-93, and became head coach 1999-00, succeeding Gary Clark, the architect of the first Section V boys swimming powerhouse.

Many people think a coach is there to train an athlete and go home. Well, Coach Kennedy is more than that. He dedicates time and energy to not only the athlete; but the person as a whole. Checking in on them when they're feeling down, encouraging good grades in school, and being an overall role model.

This honor is not possible without the assistant coaches (Ryan Callan, Marci Callan, Mike Fortner, and Dave Salmon) and our feeder programs (FAST, Modified, and Diving) throughout the years.

This is a well-deserved honor, Coach. Go have some good eats, you've earned it! On behalf of the swimmers that have gone through this program; thank you for your service.
